August 10, 2009

Dear Parents,

Hello! I’d like to welcome you and your child to my 5th grade class! I’m very excited about this year and the opportunity that I have to teach and learn from my students!

WHO AM I?
My name is Karen Shantz. I was born in Ontario, Canada and have lived in 5 of Canada's 10 provinces. I have 3 brothers and 1 sister. I have taught in Paraguay, Canada, South Korea and Taiwan. This is my fourth year teaching in Venezuela, and I look forward to another wonderful year here at C.I.C.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT IN MY CLASSROOM?
Here are some of the procedures used in 5th grade that help things run more smoothly so that we may have the best year possible.

1. Partnership. The success of each of my students depends upon us all. As a teacher, I will make sure that all assignments are posted on this website. As parents, I need you to read all newsletters with him/her, and sign the agenda each Friday. As students, I need each one to copy their assignments diligently and to go over them with you.

2. Organization. Each day, assignments will be written in the student agenda and posted on this website, which will enable you and your child to plan ahead. All papers, tests, and quizzes that were done during the week will be sent home with your son/daughter in a take-home folder every week. All papers (except for ones that I specifically request back) may be kept at home.

3. Attendance. Whenever a student is absent, they will be given a list of all assignments they need to complete. If a test was given or a project due when the student was absent, the student shall complete work on the day they return. Students who are away for an extended period of time shall meet with me to discuss extensions of project or test deadlines. It is the student’s responsibility to remember to get the missed work turned in to me, and to get any notes or read any pages that were covered during their absence.

4. Success. Students who do not completed and turn in assignments when due will stay in during recess to complete the assignment or project until it is handed in. When a project is first assigned, a sheet will be given explaining the project, the expectations and requirements, and how it will be graded. This will be discussed in class and will be sent home for you to see.

5. Character. There are 5 rules in my classroom:
1. STOP, LOOK, and LISTEN when people speak.
2. SPEAK English at all times and in an appropriate tone of voice.
3. COME to class prepared and on time.
4. COMPLETE all assignments.
5. RESPECT people, their belongings, and our environment.
These rules were made to ensure that all students learn in a productive and safe environment. At the first offense, a warning will be given. The second offense will result in loss of recess. The third offense will result in a conference with the teacher, and the student will write up a plan of action for future success. Students will be given a “clean slate” on a daily basis.

6. Preparedness. Students were given a list of supplies needed in 5th grade. I would appreciate if each student came with all supplies as soon as possible.

Thank you for the privilege of having your son/daughter in my class this year!
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to talk to me after school, email me, or leave a message with the secretary for me to call you.

Sincerely,

Miss Karen Shantz
